An example conversation
I’ve got about £4,000 for an engagement ring. She loves vintage and mostly wears silver jewellery. Where do I start?
Silver-toned jewellery points to platinum or white gold. Platinum costs more but never needs re-plating. White gold needs re-plating every few years. For a vintage feel, an oval with a hidden halo looks bigger than its carat weight.
Here’s one ring that fits, and how each part compares with the market:
- 0.90ct oval, G VS2, lab-grown (IGI)£1,180Fair
- Platinum band, 2mm£890Fair
- Hidden halo and pavé shoulders£1,420£300 above fair
The halo setting is about £300 over the market price. I found the same style for around £1,100 elsewhere. Would you like to see it, or compare a classic solitaire?

Ask in plain English
Say it the way you’d say it to a friend: “About £4k, she loves vintage and wears silver.” The concierge asks follow-up questions and explains any jargon.
Honest pros and cons
For each choice, from the metal to a shoulder-set band, you see what you gain, what you give up and what it does to the price.
A fair price for the whole ring
We price the diamond, the metal and the setting separately, so a good price on the stone can’t hide a mark-up on the platinum.
